Frequently Asked Questions

What is your approach to therapy?

I believe the best results for clients occur when the client-counselor relationship is a partnership with a shared goal of helping the client feel better. Each person brings their own strengths, as the client is the expert of her or his life experiences and the counselor is the licensed professional who has the education and counseling experience that best positions them to serve their clients. My past experiences have taught me that this type of approach – based on equality and shared responsibility for an improvement in the client’s life – leads to the best results.

I tailor how directive I am and the level of structure to what works best for my clients. For those who prefer worksheets and assignments in between sessions, we can do just that. For those who cringe at the thought of homework or worksheets, we will stick to talking. We will go with whatever suits you best.

What can I expect at the first appointment?

I will ask you to fill out some short forms with your contact and insurance information (if you haven't filled out ahead of time), as well as provide you with information about privacy and confidentiality.  The session will be spent getting to know your background and your expectations as well as discuss any questions you may have about the therapy process.

What do I need to bring to my first appointment?

You only need to bring your insurance card and photo ID, along with payment for your co-pay or deductible.

How will I know if you will be the right fit?

A good relationship is the foundation of positive therapeutic results. I will be happy to talk with you on the phone prior to meeting for a session so you can get an impression of what I am like, though we won't really know until we meet.

I think that most people feel at ease when talking to me because I am not judgmental and I recognize I ultimately serve you and your needs. I know I won't have all the answers immediately but I have the faith and confidence that together we will figure it out. Also, while I consider myself to be professional and I recognize therapy is a serious endeavor, I take a down to earth approach - I like to use humor when it's appropriate and I wear jeans instead of business clothes, as my experience has taught me it helps others feel more relaxed in sessions.

If for any reason you feel that I am not a good match for you, that is OK! I recognize that my style is not for everyone; there are times where the fit isn't what you want. If this is the case and if you wish to seek help with another therapist, I completely understand and will help in your search for a new therapist.

Benefits and risks

Counseling can have both benefits and risks. It can lead to significant reductions in feelings of distress, better relationships, and solutions to specific problems. It can also foster higher levels of self-esteem and lead to an improved ability to handle stress and hardships through the development of resilience.

Since therapy often involves discussing unpleasant aspects of your life, you may experience painful or uncomfortable feelings. Making changes in your beliefs or behavior can be scary and potentially disruptive to some of the relationships you already have. Careful consideration as to whether these risks are worth the benefits to you of changing is important, but you will not be going it alone. We will work together and I will support you as you make that determination. I will be happy to discuss specific questions or concerns you have at any time.
